Which phones can scan it?

iPhones on iOS 11 or later and Android phones on Android 10 or later join straight from the camera. Older Android phones can scan it with Google Lens or a QR app.

The code is drawn in your browser. The password is not sent to us and not saved; close the tab and it is gone. Keep in mind that anyone who scans the poster can read the password, which is why it should be a separate guest network.

Does it work with hidden networks and WEP?

Yes. Switch on “The network is hidden” for a network that does not show in the Wi-Fi list, and choose WEP or “No password” under Security if your network uses them. WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 networks all use the first option.

Does the QR code expire?

No. It holds the network details themselves, with nothing in between, so it works until you change the network name or password. Then make a new poster here, free, in a minute.

How the code works

The QR holds the network name, the security type and the password in the format every recent phone understands. Guests open the camera, point it at the poster and tap “Join”. iPhones since iOS 11 and Android phones since Android 10 do it from the camera; older Android phones need a QR app or Google Lens.

Where to put it

Where people sit down and reach for their phone: on the table, at the counter, by the waiting chairs. A table tent or a small frame works better than a poster on the far wall, because the code has to be close enough to scan without standing up.

Use a guest network

Anything printed on a poster is public. Put guests on a separate guest network, not the one your till, card terminal or office computers use. Most routers have a guest network setting. If you change the password, print a new poster the same day.
