10 visit pass: paper punch card or on the phone?

How to price a 10 visit pass, which rules to print on it and what a paper punch card cannot do. A practical guide for gyms, studios, massage and classes.

A 10 visit pass is the simplest way to keep a client for longer than one visit. Getting it right comes down to three decisions: the price, the rules and how you track the visits used. The approach below works for gyms, yoga and dance studios, massage, tanning salons and kids' classes.

How to price a 10 visit pass

Start with the price of a single visit. Multiply it by ten and take off the discount you are willing to give for being paid upfront.

Example: one visit costs €8, so ten visits would cost €80. If you sell the pass for €70, the client gets roughly 1.25 visits free. That €10 is the price of having the money in your account now and giving the client a reason to come back.

The numbers are only an example. Your margin decides the size of the discount, along with how much you need cash upfront. A smaller discount makes sense for a busy studio, a bigger one for a new business still building its client base.

Ten visits are not compulsory. If your clients come once a week, a 5 visit pass is used up in a month and can be an easier first purchase. Offer the 10 visit pass to those who have already decided.

Four rules that belong on the pass

  • Number of visits: 5, 10, or both side by side.
  • Transferability: can a friend use the pass too, or only the buyer?
  • Illness: will you extend the pass after a longer illness or not?
  • Validity: for example 3 months from purchase. This is your house rule, not an automatic system feature, so write it clearly on the pass and in your terms.

Rules the client knows in advance save awkward discussions at reception. Anything you leave unwritten gets argued from scratch every time.

What a paper pass cannot do

A paper card with punched holes works until it gets lost or left at home. The client does not know how many visits are left, and you can only check against your own notebook. If staff punch it twice by mistake, that is hard to prove. And nobody can buy a paper pass in the evening when you are closed.

A pass on the phone

With Rewardly you sell passes with an exact number of visits in your own online shop with your logo. The client pays online, receives the pass by email and saves it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. At each visit you scan it in the Rewardly app and one visit is used. Your overview shows what you have sold, what has been redeemed and what is still outstanding.

A pass belongs to the person who bought it. If someone wants to give it before Christmas or for a birthday, offer a gift voucher for the price of ten visits, which they can send with a personal message. Prices are in euros and payments go to your own Stripe account. Passes are part of the Professional plan; see the Rewardly pricing page.

If instead of prepaid visits you want to give regulars perks, such as a lower member price, see how to introduce a digital membership card. The classic stamp card is among our digital loyalty programs.
